Front desk staff at Hull JobCentre were finding that they were ill-equipped to deal with the increasing levels of Polish migrants coming through their doors. We were contacted to give JobCentre staff basic language training to enable them to lessen the language barrier.

The result was the design and production of a Poish phrase card. This convenient language tool was devised by us to help JobCentre staff communicate with the Polish community more effectively.

The phrase card contained translations of the most common expressions like "I know a few words in Polish" and "Are you here to look for work?" as well as advice on how to correctly pronounce these phrases.

The JobCentre in question were enthusiastic about the improvements seen as a result of the initiative.

"Our staff now feel much more confident in communicating with our Polish customers. This initiative has really improved our customer service. The Polish people are so pleased that somebody can speak the basics of their language.
"We've already shared the phrase card with other JobCentres around the country, so more people are benefiting."

We were contacted provide translation and interpreting services to Cheshire's busy police force. As most work carried out by the Police force is extremely time sensitive, the project specification outlined that linguists would often be required on site at very short notice. The constabulary required short turn around times to be adhered to between the request being placed and the interpreter arrival.

Thanks to our extensive database of linguists, we are able to cover all regions of the UK at short notice comfortably.

Voice-over artists are often used in the process of creating information films, CDs and even websites. In recent years organisations have needed to tailor this information to make it available to those for whom English isn't their first language.

Connexions, a public service organisation based in Luton, offer free guidance and support to all young people between the ages of 13-19. They contacted us to see if we could help with a pilot CD that would communicate their services into Urdu, Polish and Portuguese.

Upon successful completion of the pilot project, we were again called upon to translate the same script into a further 20 languages. This resulted in a single CD offering information in Albanian, Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Croatian, Farsi, French, Kurdish, Latvian, Lithuanian, Mandarin Chinese, Pashto, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Somali, Tamil, Tigrinya, Turkish, Urdu.

Case Study - Video Production

Last year, the charity Age Concern decided to make one of their educational DVDs more accessible to people whose first language is not English. We were contacted to see exactly how we could help them go about achieving this.

Our video production service encompasses a wide range of our expertise. We are able to translate the script into whichever language is required (in this case Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu) and also employ suitable-sounding voice over artists. We then dub the speech and complete almost all of the video production ourselves, leaving very little for the client to do which saves them time and resource.

Age Concern were extremely satisfied with the service and, when the finished video was presented to them, they were delighted with the results.

Having been invited to the DVD launch, alongside local MP's, one of our project management team commented that: “The finished product looked very professional".

Last summer, we worked on a multilingual publishing venture for the Refugee Arrivals Project. We provided an end-to-end solution for the publication of documents into other languages; translating their leaflet into Amharic, Kurdish, Lingala, Mandarin Chinese, Pashto, Somali, Tigrinya and Urdu. We then had our team of linguists proofread each version of the document to eliminate errors; it was then formatted to mirror the English version as closely as possible.
